Dr. Sam Purcell

Obstetrician and Gynaecologist

Born and raised on the Gold Coast, Dr Sam has travelled far and wide during his medical, obstetrics and gynaecology training. He graduated as dux of his high school and received direct entry into medicine. He graduated from the University of Queensland in 2011 with both a medical and science degree (majoring in Anatomy). He has worked at some of the largest (and smallest) hospitals in Australia. Notably, he has worked at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, The Mater Hospital in Brisbane, The Gold Coast University Hospital, The Royal Women’s Hospital in Sydney and The Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne. 

During his time at the Royal Brisbane, Dr Sam undertook additional training in advanced laparoscopy, endometriosis surgery, hysteroscopic surgery and fertility. He also had a formal role in training and supervising medical students as well as facilitating O&G teaching and exams. He has also completed research and has been published in ANZJOG (Australia and New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology). Dr Sam assisted in research on Endometriosis and Preeclampsia.

During his time at the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne, which supports up to 10 thousand births per year, Dr Sam further honed his obstetric skills as a senior registrar. Here he performed many complex caesarean sections, and further honed his obstetric ultrasound skills. He also had the opportunity to work with and learn from some of the foremost experts in advanced laparoscopic gynaecological surgery and gynae-oncological surgery.

He is especially interested in managing pelvic pain, PCOS, fertility, abnormal pap smears and all risk obstetrics.

As a clinician, Dr Sam aims to stay sharp and current, but focuses mainly on high level communication with his patients. He brings warm, friendly care and takes pride in managing patients’ and their support persons’ emotions during times of stress or medical urgency.

His hobbies include travel, snowboarding and reading, and is known to rely on his patients for new book recommendations.

He wishes for his patients to view him as enthusiastic, approachable, warm and reliable in times of need.
